The National Genealogical Society‘s annual conference, held May 9 – 12 at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, was a great experience for genealogists at every level. In-depth sessions included lectures on building research skills, military research, Kentucky records, and tech topics. The exhibit hall was filled with vendors, genealogical and historical societies, and database companies including Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast, the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, and Fun Stuff for Genealogists. Wednesday evening featured a presentation by Ancestry on their newly released databases and DNA testing.

Genealogy conferences are a great way to refresh existing skills and learn new ones. The sessions are packed with tips and case studies that truly challenge old notions of what’s possible in genealogical research. While we might not get a chance to look at some of the records the pros have discovered, it’s good to know they’re out there.

Webinars and online classes are quite popular in the world of continuing genealogy education, but conferences remind us that there’s nothing like being there in person and mingling with others who share our interests.

On Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. there will be a High Bridge Glens history presentation and book signing at the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third Street. The event is free and open to the public. Local author Mary McClure will give a slide presentation on the history of the High Bridge Glens & Caves, a Victorian era amusement park that made Cuyahoga Falls a travel sensation in the late 1800s. The park, which was located along the banks of the Cuyahoga River at Front and Prospect streets attracted up to 8,000 visitors a day and is said to have had one of the first roller coasters in the U.S. A portion of the Glens now constitutes the Glens Trail in the Gorge Metro Park. Following the presentation, the author will sign copies of her new book, High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls.
